When people search for a cheap flight, one common idea is to wait until the last few days or even hours before departure. The assumption is simple: airlines or sellers may lower their prices to fill the remaining seats.
But is a last-minute flight ticket always cheaper?
No.
Flight prices can change based on demand, remaining capacity, travel dates, airline, flight route, fare class, ticket type, and the amount of time left before departure. A flight may become cheaper close to departure in some situations, while in others, the remaining seats may become more expensive or sell out completely.
What Is a Last-Minute Flight Ticket?
A last-minute flight ticket generally refers to a ticket purchased close to the scheduled departure time or a ticket offered for sale shortly before the flight.
However, “last-minute” is not a universal fare class or a standard ticket category used in the same way by every airline.
The term is also commonly associated with charter flights, especially when unsold seats remain close to departure. In some cases, the price of remaining seats may be adjusted to encourage sales.
However, not every last-minute ticket is a charter ticket, and not every charter ticket is a last-minute ticket.
Why Can a Flight Become Cheaper at the Last Minute?
One possible reason is remaining capacity.
Imagine that a flight is approaching its departure time while several seats are still available. Depending on the market and the seller, the price of those remaining seats may be reduced in an attempt to sell the available capacity.
But this is not a fixed rule.
If demand for the flight is high, the opposite can happen. Remaining seats may become more expensive as departure approaches, and the flight may eventually sell out.
This is particularly important during holidays, peak travel periods, major events, and on routes with limited alternative flights.
Is It Always Cheaper to Buy at the Last Minute?
No.
There is no universal rule saying that waiting longer will result in a lower fare.
As departure approaches, a ticket may:
become cheaper;
remain at a similar price;
become more expensive;
or become unavailable altogether.
For this reason, “the later you buy, the cheaper it gets” should not be treated as a general rule for airline tickets.
What Affects the Price of a Last-Minute Flight?
1. Demand
When many passengers want the same flight, available seats can become more limited and prices may increase.
2. Remaining Capacity
The number of seats still available can influence how the remaining inventory is priced.
3. Travel Dates
Public holidays, seasonal peaks, major events, and other high-demand periods can significantly affect flight prices.
4. Route
Some routes have many alternative flights, while others may have only a few options. This can make waiting until the last minute more or less risky.
5. Ticket Type
Scheduled and charter tickets can have different pricing structures and conditions. Therefore, the label “last-minute” alone is not enough to evaluate a ticket.
6. Fare Class
Passengers on the same flight and in the same cabin may have different fare classes, prices, and ticket conditions. Fare class can affect factors such as price, changes, and refunds.
What Is the Difference Between a Last-Minute and a Charter Ticket?
These two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe different concepts.
A charter ticket is related to how flight capacity is obtained and sold, typically involving a charterer that purchases or secures capacity and then offers it for sale.
A last-minute ticket, on the other hand, mainly refers to the timing or circumstances of the purchase or sale close to departure.
Therefore, a charter ticket may be available for sale well before the departure date, while a scheduled ticket can also be purchased at the last minute.

When Can Buying a Last-Minute Ticket Make Sense?
Waiting can sometimes make sense if your travel plans are flexible.
For example, you may have more options if:
your travel date can change;
you do not need a specific departure time;
there are several flights on the same route;
you can change your plans if the expected fare does not appear.
If you have flexibility, comparing several flights close to departure can sometimes help you find a suitable fare.
Should You Wait Until the Last Minute for an Essential Trip?
If your travel date is fixed, relying entirely on a last-minute fare can be risky.
If you must travel on a specific date and there are only a few available flights, waiting may reduce your choices or leave you with a higher price.
Instead of waiting simply because you expect prices to fall, compare the available flights and their conditions before making your decision.
What Should You Check Before Buying a Last-Minute Flight?
Price is only one part of the decision.
Before purchasing, check:
exact departure date and time;
airline;
scheduled or charter ticket type;
fare class;
baggage allowance;
refund conditions;
cancellation or change penalties;
time remaining before departure;
alternative flights.
A slightly more expensive ticket may sometimes provide more flexibility through better change or refund conditions.
How Can You Find a Suitable Last-Minute Flight?
Instead of waiting for one specific “cheap” ticket, compare several available options.
Comparing price, departure time, airline, ticket type, and ticket conditions can help you make a more informed choice. If you can travel on more than one date or at different times, you may also have more opportunities to find a suitable fare.
Conclusion
A last-minute flight ticket can sometimes be cheaper, but there is no guarantee that waiting until the final hours or days will result in a lower price.
Flight prices are influenced by several factors, including demand, remaining capacity, travel dates, airline, ticket type, and fare class.
The most practical approach is not to focus only on the phrase “last minute,” but to compare available flights, prices, and ticket conditions and choose the option that best fits your actual travel needs.
